Did the American Revolution radically change established ideas or was it something that developed over a long period of time?

The American Revolution was kind of something that developed over a long period of time. The only thing that really changed was the society. The government didn't really change, but it did cause divisions between the population, and it reinforced slavery. There are some things that make it kind of a radical event, but for the most part, I think that it was a conservative event.
